Chapter 14

Of course, I’d assured Lien that couldn’t have been the case. Draven’s mother had died centuries ago.

My witch cousin hadn’t known the portrait had been of his mother in the first place, but that was what had struck her once she’d seen Sister Mary Katherine’s picture.

I’d seen them both. The more I thought on it, the more I thought… Maybe?

That was all she’d had to offer me, other than to instruct me to go get my gargoyle guardian and come back to help her prepare more potions.

I agreed with the first part. The Mahajans were expecting me by now.

I had too much else to do to simply come back and help her brew portions.

Especially if she expected to use them for war.

The sun was barely an ember glow on the horizon. If I was to catch Qarinah and Draven early after they awoke, I’d have to be fast. But I’d tell the Mahajans what I was up to first.

Broomie landed us in front of Hungry Like a Pup. It was only open for another hour or so, so the Mahajans were the only patrons inside, aside from Roderick and the three Vadas kids, all of whom were gathered around a table for four next to the Mahajans, each holding a handheld video game system.

A much newer model than the one Roderick had been playing with yesterday, by the looks of it. They were identical in shape, though Roderick and Flora both had gray units, Falcon a bright yellow, and Fauna a pale blue.

“Dahlia!” said Arjun, waving me over. He had a tuna sandwich and fries on a plate in front of him. Widow’s-peaked and with a slight cherubic chub to his cheeks, he had warm, dark eyes and a kindly smile whenever anyone crossed his path. “I hope you don’t mind that we ordered.”

“No, of course not. I know I’m running a bit late, and I apologize.” I stood next to Goldie’s chair and leaned Broomie against one of the open seats. Broomie curled up on the seat but kept her brush head tall to sort of sniff at Goldie’s plate. It was a salad, complete with corn, but naturally, there weren’t any cornhusks.

Goldie winked at her and waved her fork in her direction. “I told her to bring out a plate of cornhusks when she saw you. Don’t you worry about a thing, girl.”

Broomie shook her brush head in excitement, practically wagging a stalk-clump “tongue” up at me. Broomhelen’s more dog-like nature was wearing off on her.

“Roderick,” I called to my gargoyle guardian, my hand on the back of Broomie’s chair. “Did you have fun today?”

He looked up, a slight smile on his stone lips. Then Flora shouted in what appeared to be frustration and he turned his attention back to the screen.

“He was such a good helper,” said Goldie.

“And he even helped a new customer, didn’t you?” Arjun asked.

“New customer?” Luna Lane didn’t get a lot of visitors. That left precisely one guess as to whom it may have been.
